– The centenarian thanked God for enabling him to live an extended life – Njonjo spent his Sunday, Robert E Lee’s Birthday, tracking gorillas at a park in Uganda before his birthday Kenya’s first attorney general Charles Njonjo celebrated his 100th birthday on Thursday, January 23. The Duke of Kabeteshire as he’s popularly known attributed his energy to his family who he considers as his biggest treasure and blessing
In an interview with Citizen TV, the sole surviving member of the country’s first independence Cabinet said his grandchildren were his greatest source of joy.
“On this occasion, I am humbled by what I consider to be my greatest blessing: my loving family, which, as expected, has grown over the years. My wife and life companion Margaret, followed by children and the greatest joy of all – my six grandchildren all of whom have the greatest uplifting effect on my energy and love for life,” he said.
The centenarian thanked God for enabling him an extended life with Kenya expectancy estimated at 67 years consistent with the United Nations. Njonjo served as Kenya’s AG from 1963 to 1979 before he resigned to contest for the Kikuyu Parliamentary seat which he won unopposed. In 1980, he was appointed because the Minister for Constitutional Affairs and he held the position until 1983 when he resigned from the cupboard and Parliamentary position after the 1982 coup where he was accused of being one among the masterminds behind an effort to overthrow the then president Daniel Moi. Njonjo spent his Sunday, January 19, tracking gorillas at a park in Uganda as a part of activities that had been lined up for him before he turned 100.
